Russia hails unexpected G20 milestone

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has praised a joint declaration by G20 leaders in Delhi that avoids condemning Moscow for its war against Ukraine. Russia had not expected consensus and agreement on the wording was a step in the right direction.

Morocco earthquake killed thousands

At least 1,037 people have been killed and hundreds injured following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco. Many of the fatalities are in hard-to-reach areas south of Marrakech.

On March 11 1967, Music publisher, Dick James, announced that 446 different versions of the Paul McCartney song ‘Yesterday‘ had been recorded so far. “Yesterday” has been called the greatest song of the 20th century. Some have even called it the greatest song of all time. The melody to “Yesterday” came to Paul McCartney in a dream. He woke up and stumbled to the piano by his bedside to work out the chords. “Yesterday” didn’t come to McCartney completed. It took eighteen months before it was ready to be recorded. He had to verify that it was in fact an original song.

On March 11 1972, Harry Nilsson was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with his version of The Peter Ham and Tom Evans song ‘Without You’. First recorded by Badfinger in 1970, the song was also a No.1 for Mariah Carey in 1994.

Russia Is Continuing To Press Its Attack Around Bakhmut

Russian forces are continuing to press their offensive in the area around Ukraine’s Donetsk region city of Bakhmut. The Ukrainian General Staff said Russian forces launched more than 100 attacks across the front line, including around Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiyivka, and Shakhtarsk. Russia also reportedly carried out 29 air strikes and four missile strikes in the Donetsk region over the last 24 hours.

Kazakhstan is getting ready for lower house of parliament elections

Kazakhstan is gearing up for snap elections of the lower house of parliament on March 19. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called for snap elections in the wake of the deadly street protests in January 2022. The elections are part of the president’s ambitious reform agenda, Jana Kazakhstan, known as the New Kazakhstan, which aims to usher in a new era of political liberalization. The parliamentary elections are stage two of Tokayev’s program, following his reelection with 80 percent of the vote last November. The elections will see 70 percent of lawmakers elected through party lists, while the remaining seats will be contested in single-member districts.

Ukrainian soldiers are being pummelled on three sides by Russian forces who are trying to capture Bakhmut, a city in the eastern Donetsk region that has become the focus of the longest and one of the bloodiest battles since the war began. Ukraine’s authorities insist they will continue to try to hold the city despite them suffering an estimated 100-200 casualties a day.
