French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Veteran politician Michel Barnie as prime minister on Thursday, September 5, after almost two months of deadlock following legislative elections that produced no clear majority in Parliament. At 73, Barnier is the oldest premier in the history of modern France and has been tasked with forming a unifying government in the service of the country.

1,301 died on Hajj this year
More than 1,300 people died on this year’s Hajj pilgrimage – with numerous cases due to heat stress and unauthorized trips accounting for more than four out of five of the fatalities. The Saudi government said that 83% of those who died were unauthorized to perform Hajj and walked long distances under direct sunlight, without adequate shelter or comfort.

6 killed at Nashville school and deceased shooter identified
Three children and three adults were killed by an attacker who carried two assault-style weapons and a pistol into an elementary school in Nashville. Officers shot and killed the attacker at the Covenant School, attached to the Covenant Presbyterian church in the Tennessee state capital. Lamenting the heartbreaking attack, President Joe Biden repeated his call for Congress to pass meaningful gun control reform including an assault weapons ban.

Ukraine has brought back 307 children from occupied territories
Ukraine has brought 307 children out of Russia-occupied territories, including an eight-year-old boy who was recently reunited with his grandmother. Ukraine’s authorities estimate more than 16,000 children have been deported to Russia since the start of the war in 2022.
