Officials in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh are investigating the deaths of at least 68 people in the district of Ballia between Thursday and Sunday as temperatures soar in northern and eastern parts of the country. The surge in deaths this months follows a warning from the country’s meteorological department about potential heat-related casualties.

Astronomers found the forbidden planet
Astronomers have found an unusually large planet orbiting a small star, located about 280 light-years from Earth. The unexpected size of the newly discovered world, called TOI 5205b, has led researchers to call it the forbidden planet. About the size of Jupiter, it was spotted by researchers using NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS.

France to pull troops out of Niger following coup
France will end its military presence in Niger as a result of the coup that removed the democratically elected president. The announcement was a significant. If expected, blow to France’s policy in Africa, with French troops having had to pull out of neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso in recent years after coups there.

Morocco earthquake killed thousands
At least 1,037 people have been killed and hundreds injured following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco. Many of the fatalities are in hard-to-reach areas south of Marrakech.
