Ukraine’s forces hold defence along the frontline in Donetsk, including of the besieged town of Bakhmut, with the fiercest battles raging for the cities of Vuhledar and Maryinka. Commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi said Russia carries out some 50 attacks daily in Donetsk, a region in Ukraine’s southeast that Moscow has been trying to occupy fully.

Fire kills at least 39 people at migrant detention center near Mexico-US border
At least 39 people died in a fire at a migration center in Ciudad Juarez, a city on Mexico’s border with the United States. Authorities said the fire at the office of National Migration Institute (INM) broke out after they picked up a group of migrants from the streets of the city, and detained them. The cause of the fire or the victims’ nationalities have not been released by Mexico’s National Migration Institute, who have launched an investigation into the blaze, which left 29 people injured.

Mississippi state government has declared a state of tornado emergency
At least 26 people have died in Mississippi and Alabama after a tornado tore through the southern US states. Search and rescue efforts are continuing, and the Mississippi state government has declared a state of emergency. In this rural town of only 2,000 people, where one fifth of residents live below the poverty line, dozens of buildings have been flattened by the fury of the tornado. The tornado hit in the middle of the night – people had been sleeping and had not heard the alerts.

Dengue outbreak kills over 1,000 in Bangladesh
More than 1,000 people have died from dengue in Bangladesh’s worst outbreak on record. According to figures from the Bangladesh Directorate General of Health Services, since January, 1,017 people have died from the mosquito-borne disease including more than 100 children, with infections rising over 208,000.
